Project Description - The Kampala Buzzline
1. Strengthening ecosystem resilience
By creating and improving pollinator habitats, the initiative ensures the survival
of bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, which are crucial for plant pollination. This
enhances biodiversity and supports the regeneration of native plant species,
making urban green spaces more adaptable to climate changes, stronger urban
food systems, supporting community gardens and local agriculture due to
enhanced pollination.
2. Climate mitigation and adaptation
Our work helps with carbon sequestration by increasing green cover, which
absorbs Carbon di oxide from the atmosphere. Green spaces also regulate urban
temperatures, reducing the urban heat island effect and making the city more
livable.
3. Community capacity building
We engage local residents, schools, and community bodies in climate education
and practical action, equipping them with skills in urban greening and
conservation efforts thus fostering a sense of ownership, ensuring long-term
care of green spaces.
Our Partnerships with institutions like Ndejje University, National Forestry
Authority, Kampala Capital City Authority and Buganda Kingdom climate Office
provide knowledge-sharing opportunities, making communities more climate-
resilient and knowledgeable.
4. Research and innovations
The project includes research on the migratory patterns of the painted lady
butterfly (Vanessa Cardui), which helps in understanding climate impacts on
pollinators as well as well indicator for seasonal changes.
Twinning projects with universities in London and schools create global
knowledge exchange, bringing best practices in conservation and climate
resilience to Kampala.
